How To Keep a Strong Immune System during Coronavirus Mayhem

How To Keep a Strong Immune System during Coronavirus Mayhem March 19, 2020

We know that the vast majority of the population will have a full recovery should they contract coronavirus. It is also likely that many people all over the world will be infected over the next few months, some will hardly notice if their immune system is strong. We also know there is the smaller portion of the population the very elderly, the immune compromised who are of concern and most at risk.

Many of the quarantine and self isolation protocols we are seeing unfolding are put in place by governments in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. This is a smart move to ensure those compromised people, who may need to be hospitalised, have a bed in hospital or ICU should they need it. If they all get infected at the same time the current hospital system will not be able to cope.

So we are part of the solution! And we need to make a huge effort to keep ourselves healthy and change many of our day to day habits to stay healthy. I want to encourage you to take care of you and by doing so we all take care of each other.

Here are my suggestions you can do to ensure you build a healthy immune system which I have compiled with my naturopath. This is time to respect the needs of your body and not the time to be frivolous with your health and wellbeing.

Reduce Stress

It’s normal to feel sad, angry, stressed, worried and anxious during a crisis. Our body becomes depleted of Magnesium, B Vitamins and Iron when we are creating too much of the stress hormone cortisol. Try and meditate daily, do yoga and breathing exercises to relax and make sure you talk to people you trust like family and friends.

  • Lessen the time you and your family spend watching or listening to media that you find upsetting. Get the facts from a credible source only such as the WHO.

Eat Well

My husband is working from home and we are now having 2 green smoothies a day instead of 1… he makes the morning one and I do the afternoon one and we make it a big one and halve it. Stay away from junk food and nourish your body with vegetable soups, broths and healthy protein.

Keep Moving

Just because your gym or yoga studio is either closed or you are worried about being around others at this time, it’s no excuse to stop moving. You can download my 6 Week Workout Challenge from my website which are fun body weight circuits to do at home. Go for a walk in nature or follow my Youtube channel for lounge room classes you can do in the lounge instead of watching TV.

  • Your body detoxifies when you get your heart rate up and get your muscles pumping. Make sure you move for a minimum 30 minutes every day.

Keep Interacting

Luckily it is so easy to still be connected to friends and family these days, with Skype, WhatsApp or just a phone call! Make sure you are talking to loved ones daily to avoid feeling lonely or isolated.

Get Some Sunshine

Levels of Vitamin D have been proven to be a major factor in immunity… so keep your high by getting into the sun each day. If it’s cold or cloudy where you are, make sure you take a vitamin D supplement.

  • Just 10 minutes a day is plenty. Try and avoid the hottest part of the day and always be sun smart.

Supplement

If you have any underlying chronic conditions or are pregnant please check with your Doctor or a Naturopath, or see the qualified professional at your local chemist/health food store to ensure that these supplements and dosages are suitable for you to take. These dosages are higher than normal recommendations and are based on the best support for any cold, flu or virus invasion. My naturopath recommends:

  • Vitamin D3, eg Bioceuticals oral spray 3000 iu per day (2 sprays am and pm)
  • Buffered vitamin C eg Orthoplex or Bioceuticals or Biopractica 3-5 doses per day
  • Immune defence such as Armaforce (which has andrographis, olive leaf echinacea and zinc) 2 x day (2 three x day (6) if you get sick) or AndroNK
  • Multi-strain pro-biotic (and/or up your fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut etc at least once a day)

Good Gut Health

Take a shot of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice daily before one or more of your meals and avoid drinking water or any drink with meals. Also Chinese Medical herbs have been shown to be effective, see a qualified practitioner.

Any questions just let me know, you can be part of my community here, where we discuss health and wellness. Respect your body and you will get through this just fine. Enjoy the peace and quiet and always reach out if you need support.
